一、原動機的類型
泵的原動機類型選擇一般可根據其動力來源、工廠或裝置的能量平衡環境條件、調節控制要求及經濟效益等條件進行綜合考慮來確定。泵的原動機類型常用的有以下幾種:
(1)電動機。具有結構簡單、運行可靠、經濟、壽命長、維護方便、價格便宜、體積小、啟動操作簡單等特點。所以使用最為廣泛，凡有電網的地方都首選電動機作為原動機。
(2)汽輪機。只有在有蒸汽源的場合下使用，常為改善工廠的蒸汽平衡而使用。它適用于大中型泵中，具有可調速，防爆防燃下工作并可用于無電或停電情況下使用。
(3)蒸汽機。只有在有蒸汽源的場合下使用，它的體積大、效率低、轉速低，目前已很少使用，只有在特定的場合下使用。
(4) 內燃機。包括汽油機、柴油機、燃氣輪機。一般在無電、停電或移動使用場合下使用，其相對體積較大，結構復雜，壽命短，不但購置成本高，運行維修成本也很高，所以只有在無電、移動情況下使用，常作為緊急停電的應急備用泵的原動機。
(5)液力透平。常在為了循環液體動力回收情況下使用，可以節省動力。
